The earthquake killed more than 1,000 people and affected 250,000 families. Based on WPO-YPO’s field survey in November 2009 there were 39 schools damaged in Pariaman. One of the schools that was beyond repair is SD Negeri 11, located 15 minutes from Pariaman town. The school was built in 1972 and consists of eight classes with a total of 177 students, that were studying under an emergency tent. WPO-YPO funded the cost to rebuild the classroom building for SD Negeri 11 Palak Aneh.

NAZARETH HOME FOR STREET CHILDREN
Bustos, Bulacan, The Philippines

The Nazareth Home for Street Children Foundation, Inc. was founded with the vision of being responding to the call and challenges of Pope John Paul II to give children “a future of peace”. It was started by Bishop Cirilo R. Almario, JR., DD, Bishop Emeritus of Malolos, and the Sisters of the Divine Shepherd religious congregation, which was then governed by Mo. Ma. Fatima R. Senarillos, SDS, Superior. Bishop Almario formally opened the community on 25 October 1995. The Philippines is home to at least 1.5 million street children, a phenomenon that has rightfully become a big concern. Driven to the streets by poverty, social injustice and crowded slum conditions, these neglected, abandoned and at most times maltreated children are forced into the squalid adult environment of the streets to utilize every opportunity to eke out a living no matter how meager. In the streets, these children face a lot of exploitation, both physical and sexual. The Nazareth Home for Street Children believes that mankind owes to children the best it has to offer, not later but now.
